This week seemed to go so fast, but they always say time flies when you’re having fun! Some quick reminders for you all for the upcoming week, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. Also, the kiddos will be leading ABVM’s first Station’s of the Cross on Friday at 2:00. If you can make it, we would love to see you there!
In the Silver Knights we read the story Yonder Mountain A Cherokee Legend. The students practiced comparing and contrasting with the characters within the book and worked hard on determining its theme which was that it is important for us to help others in need even though they may not be our friends or tribesmen. What a wonderful message to reflect on. We also connected it to Jesus words of following the golden rule and how we might do that in classroom, the cafeteria, and out at recess. Finally, we worked on sentence structure this week and practiced subject/verb agreement. You may have also noticed them addicted to mobymax. I created a contest that went from Wednesday to Friday for them to compete for points on vocabulary and language activities in order to earn a shield. They did awesome and I foresee a few more in our near future 🙂
In math this week I introduced a new multiplication math fact game called boom that the kids really enjoyed. If you would like to try it at home, let me know and I can make one for you! We also did a lot more work on identifying fractions: adding and subtracting those with the same denominator, finding them on a number line, and determining those that are equal to 1 and 1/2. We are also spending a lot of time really learning the terminology of fractions like numerator, denominator, proper fraction and improper fraction. Otherwise they are really doing great with them. We will be taking their next module test on Thursday.
In science we have started reviewing what we remember from last year about space. I put up a chart on the board that had a bunch of facts about the Earth, Sun, and Moon that the students had to research and figure out. We also reviewed rotate and revolve, how long each take the Earth to complete, and what they cause. Rotate is simply the Earth spinning in a circle, which takes 24 hours, and causes night and day. Revolve means to spin around another object, takes the Earth about 365 days to complete, and causes the four seasons. I had the students act them out by becoming the inner planets in our solar system. We also learned the acronym My Very Earthly Mother Just Served Us Nachos to remember the order of the planets. This week we will be creating the Solar System and researching one planet to teach the class about.
In religion, we continued talking about Mass and how the Eucharist is what brings us all together into the unity of God. We talked about the importance of being on good terms with God before receiving the Eucharist which just means having a grateful and forgiving heart before receiving the body and blood of Christ. Since we led Mass we also talked about the parts of Mass and how every Mass we pray the Penitential Act to ask God to forgive us of our sins. This in turn helps us remember to forgive others as well. As I mentioned earlier, we will be leading the Stations of the Cross this week on Friday at 2. If you, Grandma or Grandpa, or other friend or relative would be able to join us I know it will mean a lot to the kiddos to see you there!
Thanks for all that you do for our school! Have a great week!
