Hi Parents,

This week in Silver Knights we read the story What Do Illustrators Do? which goes behind the scenes to show how different artists illustrate Jack and the Beanstalk. We practiced identifying nonfiction text features and explained how they helped readers better understand the story. We also worked on synonyms and created synonym turkeys by using the thesaurus. Additionally we reviewed verbs this week by acting them out and identifying them as past, present, or future. Finally we worked on opinion writing and learned that an opinion paragraph is made up of an introductory sentence, 3 reasons, and a conclusion sentence. I had the students write a persuasive opinion on what type of music we will get to listen to during spelling and grammar practice. This week we will be reading about turkeys and writing an opinion paragraph on the best food to eat at Thanksgiving Dinner as well as review subject and predicate.

In math this week we continued to work on our x8 facts which is taking double, double, double of the factor being multiplied by 8. This isn’t an easy task for the kiddos but I know they’ll get them eventually. We also worked on our x0 and x1 facts which were much easier 🙂  The kiddos also did very well at solving word problems with an unneeded extra number. Remember to keep practicing the x0,1,2,4,8, and 10s facts with your child at home.  Next week we will be reviewing subtraction and creating multiplication turkeys. We will also do an activity on fractions with m&ms.

In science/social studies this week, we finished creating our biomes and typed up our research. Make sure you check them out this week before/after conferences. The children are all very proud of their hard work. We also started learning about Native American cultures. So far we have read about the Comanche and the Iroquois tribes. We have been comparing our own lives to Native American culture as well as how different Native American tribes are similar and different. On Friday we started making Buffalo skins with Native American symbol art and next week we will be reading more on a different Indian tribe as well as working on creating totem poles and tepees.

In religion, we learned about the importance of praying to God and the different kinds of prayers we can use. The children then had to create two examples of each type of prayer. We also worked own what it means to be a friend. We sat in a friendship circle where someone would sit in the middle and we went around telling them something we liked about that person. We then watched a video by Kid President on 20 Things We Should Say More Often.  The kids really enjoyed it and we talked about ways we can be a good friend in and out of the classroom by what we say, do, and how our body language communicates positive or negative feelings to others. Next week we will be working on being thankful for what we have and how we show others we are thankful for who they are and for what they do for us.

We have a very short week next week – only Monday and Tuesday –  but I am very excited to meet with you all and talk about the progress your child is making in school!

Have a great Thanksgiving break,
